After a series of exho matches against Bellucci, Tsonga and Haas, the Fed left Sao Paulo and made his way to Argentina, where he will face DelPo in two exho matches on Dec. 12 and 13.
On his way to Buenos Aires, Fed first stopped by Iguazu Falls, where he took this photo at what is quite possibly the world’s most beautiful waterfall:
The Federer Express then landed in Buenos Aires. This is Fed’s first time traveling to Argentina and Argie tennis fans waited in the dark night to cheer his arrival. Robert Federer is also part of the entourage and this video of Fed’s arrival in BsAs is hilarious, if only for the first part, where Papa Fed steps out of the airport to loud cheers, only to then hastily retreat back into the airport terminal. Moments later, Roger steps out to even louder applause:
Fed then enjoyed a meal of Argentina’s famed asado, after which he had a press conference with DelPo, ahead of their exho matches. In addition to their tennis exhos, they will be playing football on Thursday at DelPo’s beloved Bombonera stadium. Fed and DelPo will be playing on one side against Argie futbolistas Riquelme and Batistuta.
FedPotro went on quite the charm offensive at their press conference, which can be viewed here.
They stared lovingly into each other’s eyes as they spoke of their upcoming exho. Fed said one of his reasons for visiting Argentina was the rivalries he enjoyed with ARG’s roster of talent over the years, including Gaudio, Nalby and DelPo.
It’s quite ironic that this is the Gillette Federer Tour, given DelPo’s infrequent shaving tendencies. He is nicely scruffy.
The secret murmurs. DelPo usually reserves his secret murmuring for only the closest of pals, like Pico. At the presser, DelPo said “I consider Roger as my friend. I don’t know if he feels the same,” to which Roger grinned and patted DelPo’s shoulder, assuring him that the feeling was mutual.
I could write a ten-page story based on the feelings being expressed in the photo above.
Fed had nice words for DelPo and said that it was entirely within the realm of possibility that DelPo could one day contend for the no. 1 ranking. It’s not the type of thing to be said lightly and I think it’s a nice vote of confidence from Fed on DelPo’s form. The quotes from Fed’s presser can be seen here (in Spanish).
FedPotro then attended a special dinner, where DelPo showed his rebellious streak by going sans tie:
Looking at the tie DelPo’s coach Franco Davin chose to wear, I suppose it’s not the worst thing ever that DelPo decided to attend the event tie-less:
Per Argie journalist Sebastian Torok, the woman standing to Davin’s left is his girlfriend/wife. Wow!
Fed was apparently gifted a miniature version of Messi’s national jersey. I suppose his twin daughters will fight over it!
The menu for the dinner is listed here. I’m pretty sure DelPo had a say in deciding the dessert, which was brownies with ice cream (oh well, it’s the off-season!)
Here’s hoping that the FedPotro exhos are as fun as Fed’s matches in Brazil!
In closing, I leave you with a pair of “way back when” style photos that show DelPo and Fed at their dorktastic best (on the beach with long hair):
Since both photos above are highly unflattering to both men, here they are playing football in the past:
Let the games begin!
