One piece of the mystery has been solved. Even if Del Potro does qualify for the WTF, he will be in Nalby’s good graces. In a Spanish interview with ESPN Deportes, Del Potro talked about his comeback season. I don’t fully understand what he said, but he seemed assured and level-headed. Good to know. He was then asked whether there would be trouble for Team Argentina if he qualified for the London WTF.
Delpo said it wouldn’t be a problem, because the flight from London to Valencia is only two hours (unlike 2008, when he made the near 20hr journey from Shanghai to Mar del Plata).
I don’t know why, but this answer is hilarious. I can imagine Nalby looking up flight times from London to Valencia, calculating the head and tail winds, before finally giving his blessing to Delpo.
Also, Valencia is the confirmed venue for the final? According to Delpo, it seems so. All kidding aside, it seems Team Argentina is keen on avoiding internal strife. I’m still not convinced that Del Potro’s very full schedule this fall is the best approach for avoiding injuries. But for now, Team Argentina does not look set to implode again.
