Soderling Will Not Defend Paris

In recent news, Robin Soderling will not be defending his title at the Paris-Bercy Masters.  He will be replaced in the draw by Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil.  Due to mono, Soderling hasn’t been active since winning the Ski Star Swedish Open right after Wimbledon.

I’m of two minds about Soderling.  I enjoy watching his game and I like that he plays aggressively.  He brings excitement to his matches with top players.  That and drama.  Who can forget Nadal all but condemning Soderling to hell at Wimbledon in 2007?  Or Fernando Gonzalez getting into a very heated argument with Soderling in Miami?  Or Del Potro angrily shouting at Soderling at the Estoril Open this year?  In good fun, he’s a player that I love to hate because he’s a fearsome opponent for everyone on the tour.  Which is why I miss watching him play.

Soderling will lose all his points from his title in Paris last year, which may see him slip out of the top 10 (he’s currently no. 6)  Hopefully, he’ll be ready to play at the start of 2012 and maintain the good form he’s been carrying for the past 2-3 years.

JMDP, uhm, has some extra time in Stockholm this week.  Why not buy some flowers and visit your dimpled amigo in his convalescent state?

About mariposaxprs

I play favorites with Juan Martin Del Potro, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez, Gilles Simon and the long line of mercurial talent that drives me to despair in front of the screen at odd hours during the week.

Haha, I was not awares of this Robin-JMDP drama. Robin has a serious talent for getting under players’ skins it seems! I recall him kind of getting in Roger’s face a little at the 2010 US Open (well…as much as a tennis player ever really gets in another player’s face…) over a bad call, saying something to the effect of “you want it? (the point)” AWK-ward. 😉 The mono situation is really unfortunate, though, for Robin and just overall; seems like it is practically an epidemic on the tour sometimes!

He has a def talent for getting under their skin! Often, he comes across as little tone-deaf in tense match situations. Doh, I forgot the Robin-Gonzo spat, that was probably the funniest one: Just updated my post with it now:)

The mono situation is scary. It seems after 8-10 yrs on tour the stress is too much for the body to take? I’m keeping my fingers crossed that no more players have to face it next year.

LOLZ–is there anybody Robin HASN’T had a fight with?! Although, to be fair, I think Gonzo himself got into it with a few players over the years…most famously w/ Stepanek, of course:

        I miss Gonzo. 😉

Wow, the shot at Stepanek and the drama that preceded it was amazing (to the extent that striking someone with a tennis ball can be amazing)!! 🙂 Gonzo definitely has a list of players he does not like, hah. I miss Gonzo too, he has such a fun game but the injuries can’t seem to stay away now. Next year’s Olympics are going to be one sad goodbye to many of the tennis greats…
