JMDP is into the SF of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, where he will face his first real challenge in Kevin Anderson. I hope he pulls through and that a JMDP vs Tsonga final takes place in Vienna. JMDP hasn’t played many matches against players in the bottom half of the top 10, so a Tsonga match-up would reveal his current form.
In spite of the lackluster play, the Vienna Open has kindly taken the initiative on the PR front. Thomas Muster with his wax figure at Madame Tussauds, Anderson and Petzschner as chocolatiers, Tsonga at the Spanish riding school in Vienna, and Mirnyi and Nestor as costumed golfers. Mirnyi/Nestor are also the SF opponents in doubles for Del Potro/Stepanek. They don’t seem too worried about their upcoming match.
I wonder if JMDP’s agent works overtime to prevent the media from ever reaching his client. Why isn’t he wearing a powdered wig and doing a Brahms impersonation for the Vienna Open? Someone mentioned that ever since his return to the tour, DelPo seems to have quieted down a lot. There aren’t any “fun” photos of him doing promotional work for the tours. This is an unwelcome development.
He used to be drawn in to all manner of promotional events (photo from 2008/9):
Trivia: Did you know the Davis Cup trophy is called La Ensaladera? It’s a sterling silver salad bowl. JMDP can make the salads and he’ll be shopping for a bowl with Team Argentina in December. It’d be a nice addition to the Orange Bowl he won as a junior. The silverplate coffee pot wasn’t so bad either. Still, one cannot entertain guests with a two-course offering of oranges and coffee. One needs a proper salad bowl.
