Introducing…Pico, the new Davis Cup Warrior?

En route to his showing in the Valencia final, Juan Monaco defeated three Spaniards: Nicolas Almagro, Juan Carlos Ferrero, and David Ferrer.  The only non-Spaniard he defeated was Fabio Fognini in R2.  The last two wins over Ferrero and Ferrer were surprising upsets, given Pico’s lackluster season this year.  No matter, because the Argentine was playing a high level of persistent tennis this week.

Question: What stands out more? The jacket or the hair?

If Pico anticipated he’d reach the final, he would have brought his nicer Adidas jacket to Valencia.  All the more reason to lend support to Pico, when he plays another Spaniard, Marcel Granollers, in today’s final.  Neither player has a 500-level tournament in his palmarès, so the final should be well-contested.  If Pico should win in Valencia, this could shake up Argentina’s Davis Cup singles line-up as well.

I play favorites with Juan Martin Del Potro, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez, Gilles Simon and the long line of mercurial talent that drives me to despair in front of the screen at odd hours during the week.

Wow, on the jacket. It doesn’t even fit, does it?? Aren’t the sleeves supposed to like, traverse the entire length of his arm, including the wrist? Poor Pico. It seems he got stuck with a leftover (possibly women’s) jacket.

Hahaha his jacket reminds me of a jumpsuit I used to wear when I was 7 yrs old. I loved it, simply because I didn’t know any better. I wonder how Pico was forced into wearing this women’s jacket. He’s being a good sport about it, but sometimes I wonder how Adidas’ apparel design team is run =/

Am I the only one who thinks that Pico looks like The Doors’ Jim Morrison post LSD trip in this photo? Drinking some recovery OJ? Maybe it’s just the trippy shirt. And, of course, the hair.

Isn’t it nice to see him playing well, though? The last time I really got to see Monaco actually play TENNIS was when I thought–for the blink of an eye–that he might take out Tomas earlier in the year. He didn’t. But he’s so close to the title right now…

Pico usually looks cheerful and light-hearted, so this photo is a nice departure from that image. The crumpled forehead and grimace he’s wearing, along with the “recovery OJ” 😉 Perhaps the geometric patterns on his jacket can be seen in a different light now? It is all a bit rock-star.

Given the great week he had in Valencia (notwithstanding the loss in the final), it’s all very fitting as well. If only Pico could always play like he did in Valencia…
