Way Back When: Junior Davis Cup

Only recently, I found out there was a Junior Davis Cup tournament.  A quick perusal of the site reveals two things: 1) Like their senior counterparts, Argentina’s Junior Davis Cup team have never won the tournament.  2) During the 2004 Junior Davis Cup, DelPo took his captain duties very seriously.  In 2004, Argentina Jr. lost to Russia Jr. in a final where Argentina were the favorites.  This sounds eerily reminiscent of Argentina’s 2008 DC loss to Spain.  Is there a special potion to ward off the curse?

Junior Davis Cup has been around since 1985.  This year, Great Britain took the title for the first time, defeating Italy in the final.

Here’s another photo of DelPo from his junior days.  It’s surprising to see how his grip and posture (and facial expression) have remained uniform over the years:

Back to Davis Cup: On Friday, the captains will announce the teams for the real Davis Cup final.  Argentina’s likely squad: Juan Martin del Potro, David Nalbandian, Juan Monaco, Juan Ignacio Chela, and Eduardo Schwank.  Spain’s likely squad: Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez, Fernando Verdasco, and Marcel Granollers.

About mariposaxprs

I play favorites with Juan Martin Del Potro, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez, Gilles Simon and the long line of mercurial talent that drives me to despair in front of the screen at odd hours during the week.

That is such great side-by-side! DelPo was so incredibly cute as a teenager…he definitely would have been my high school crush, that’s for sure. Not that he’s not cute now, but he’s just different-looking. Elfness really takes hold after age 18, I guess… 😉

Whatever do you mean?!? He cleans up nicely and he has a full head of hair (yes–I went there!) 😉 The junior photos of him playing tennis are precious–I can imagine him playing with the same mannerisms and all.

Love this post. So much fun to see the (literal) physical evidence that while people are always changing, they also never change! My favorite is that top right photo. How often have we seen that particular face this year?
