Photos: Team Argentina Train Together

Team Argentina have been practising in Palermo this week, before they depart to Sevilla on Friday.  Here are photos of Argentina’s Davis Cup team.  DelPo, Nalby, Pico, Chela, and Eduardo Schwank were all present, as was Facundo Bagnis (the young lefty will travel with the team as the sparring partner or “impersonator of Rafa” for ARG).

“El Rey” Nalbandian (sorry, that’s what I’m going to call him the next two weeks :)) back at work after his hamstring injury:

Nalby and DelPo have both recently stated they’d be willing to play all the matches, including the doubles.  Hopefully, Captain Tito will stop them both from battering their already battered bodies.  Gone are the days when Nalby would play through a hernia, or was it all his effort that first induced the hernia?  Same difference.  Nalby could be better used for doubles and then the reverse singles, while DelPo could have a day of rest.

There is speculation Pico will play the first rubber against Rafa as a “sacrificial lamb,” leaving DelPo the responsibility to beat Ferru.  Nalby would then be well-rested for the doubles match.  Now, I am a staunch Delpo-ite, but I am firmly in support of Nalby for doubles (No offense, DelPo! Just…doubles was always for improving your net skills, right?)

To continue speculating, the question then is who’ll be selected as Nalby’s doubles partner.  Pico?  DelPo?  Chela?  Schwank?  (Schwank has had terrific success as a doubles player, but he’s recently been playing Challenger events after being sidelined by injury).

Here are Nalby and Pico sitting on a bench:

This is only my opinion, but the following seems like a strong selection: Pico v Rafa, DelPo v Ferru, Nalby/Pico (or Schwank) vs. Fer/Feli, DelPo v Rafa, and Nalby v Ferru.

About mariposaxprs

I play favorites with Juan Martin Del Potro, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez, Gilles Simon and the long line of mercurial talent that drives me to despair in front of the screen at odd hours during the week.

Pico will play the first rubber against Rafa as a “sacrificial lamb”??
I dunno, that sounds like psychological warfare to me! Rafa vs. el gran Pico?? Also, are Nalby’s eyes getting bluer? Those are really blue eyes. Also, DelPo’s half-shaven look is kind of intimidating. And does he have a flat-top?? That is some seriously three-dimensional hair in the 2nd pic!

Nalby’s eyes are bluer than the Argentinean flag. It’s like destiny!

When I first read about Pico playing against Rafa as a “sacrificial lamb,” the Spanish article basically stated it as “Pico has earned his chance to die against Rafa.” After inquiring, I found out what that really meant (poor Pico, who’s played so well too).

DelPo’s hair~~ It has its flat-top days, but it can be nice and fluffy too (like a souffle)! 😉 Evidence:

Oh dear, poor Pico. But I suppose I’m willing for him to “die against Rafa” if it will help Rafa love tennis again.

And definitely, let’s keep Delpo away from the doubles court until he learns to love the volley!

Haha Delpo playing doubles is like me experimenting with a new cupcake recipe. As a hobby, it’s certainly tolerable and on occasion joyful. Would I open a cupcake shop though? No. Not that I make bad cupcakes! Delpo isn’t terrible at doubles either! But ya know, it just doesn’t make sense beyond a hobby… 😉

Perhaps he should practice by volleying cupcakes. The chocolate-chip drop volley. Carve up some red velvet. Slice some vanilla buttercream.

I haven’t actually seen Delpo play doubles, so I’m glad to have your description. In singles he usually looks so … unhappy when he has to come to net (excepting this past Wimbledon!) that I can’t imagine he relishes the experience.
