Based on Twitter evidence, Gael Monfils has had the busiest off-season.
First, he was spotted in St. Pierre with good friend Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, sipping cocktails by the beach. This was right after Jo’s loss to Fed in London (seems so long ago already):
I nominate Gael and Jo for best tennis couple. Gael is clearly the type of girlfriend who dresses up the “couple photos” with a sepia tint (for that added romantic touch):
Gael and Jo sit on a bench together. It’s their re-enactment of Notting Hill:
Then there was the jolly breakdance that followed their exhibition match:
The following week, Gael was in Barbados with Venus Williams, John Isner and Vika Azarenka for a mixed-doubles exho:
Gael & Jo(hn) Isner in Barbados. Witness Gael’s pained expression—he misses Jo. It’s not the same when he’s fighting for sitting space on an ice-box with Isner:
This week, Gael is in Buenos Aires, playing the La Copa Peugeot exhibition tournament— with Eduardo Schwank, David Nalbandian, Gaston Gaudio, Mariano Zabaleta (ARG’s new DC sub-captain), Fernando Gonzalez (!), Marcos Baghdatis and Juan Carlos Ferrero:
There he is! Boss played against “El Rey” in Buenos Aires:
Back to Gael, who apparently only packed one casual t-shirt for his multi-destination journey. (Also, why does Baggy look so desolate in Buenos Aires?)
For those keeping count, Gael has made his way from St. Pierre to Barbados to Buenos Aires in the span of three weeks, for exhibition tournaments. Gael will also be playing at the all-star exhibition tourny in Abu Dhabi (Dec. 29-31). I don’t know what he has scheduled between next week and Abu Dhabi.
Seriously, did Gael buy a house? Why is he in such a rush to play exho after exho during the short off-season? That’s quite the itinerary for the Frenchman. Remember when I sniffed my nose at DelPo’s non-invitation to Abu Dhabi, by claiming the Uruguay exho he would play in 2012 was far superior? Well, Gael has easily trumped DelPo & the rest of the ATP in traversing the world for exhibition tournaments. I may envy Gael’s frequent-flier miles, but I wonder more about his preparation for 2012.
