Photos: Around the World with Gael

Based on Twitter evidence, Gael Monfils has had the busiest off-season.

First, he was spotted in St. Pierre with good friend Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, sipping cocktails by the beach.  This was right after Jo’s loss to Fed in London (seems so long ago already):

I nominate Gael and Jo for best tennis couple.  Gael is clearly the type of girlfriend who dresses up the “couple photos” with a sepia tint (for that added romantic touch):

Gael and Jo sit on a bench together.  It’s their re-enactment of Notting Hill:

Then there was the jolly breakdance that followed their exhibition match:

The following week, Gael was in Barbados with Venus Williams, John Isner and Vika Azarenka for a mixed-doubles exho:

Gael & Jo(hn) Isner in Barbados. Witness Gael’s pained expression—he misses Jo.  It’s not the same when he’s fighting for sitting space on an ice-box with Isner:

This week, Gael is in Buenos Aires, playing the La Copa Peugeot exhibition tournament with Eduardo Schwank, David Nalbandian, Gaston Gaudio, Mariano Zabaleta (ARG’s new DC sub-captain), Fernando Gonzalez (!), Marcos Baghdatis and Juan Carlos Ferrero:

Where is Boss? Why isn't Juan Carlos Ferrero in this photo? (Photo: BA Tennis)

There he is!  Boss played against “El Rey” in Buenos Aires:

Back to Gael, who apparently only packed one casual t-shirt for his multi-destination journey.  (Also, why does Baggy look so desolate in Buenos Aires?)

For those keeping count, Gael has made his way from St. Pierre to Barbados to Buenos Aires in the span of three weeks, for exhibition tournaments.  Gael will also be playing at the all-star exhibition tourny in Abu Dhabi (Dec. 29-31).  I don’t know what he has scheduled between next week and Abu Dhabi.

Seriously, did Gael buy a house?  Why is he in such a rush to play exho after exho during the short off-season?  That’s quite the itinerary for the Frenchman.   Remember when I sniffed my nose at DelPo’s non-invitation to Abu Dhabi, by claiming the Uruguay exho he would play in 2012 was far superior?  Well, Gael has easily trumped DelPo & the rest of the ATP in traversing the world for exhibition tournaments.  I may envy Gael’s frequent-flier miles, but I wonder more about his preparation for 2012.

  2. Great to see the pics of Gael Monfils. Since it’s the off month (I refuse to call it an offseason), and it’s Crazy Predictions Time, I am predicting that Gael Monfils will win all the Grand Slams PLUS the Olympic Gold Medal next year. 😉

As QueridoRafa says, if that actually did happen by some ungodly chance, I will be regarded as a genius!

You’re right, it is an off-month, not an off-season 🙂

Your predictions may have a way of becoming true!! You will then be flooded with more predictions requests. Next year should be a fun-filled, if packed, tennis year. With all the top stars focused on the Olympics, who knows, maybe Gael or someone else could slip through and win a major tournament. I think the French tennis federation president would love to see that!

thanks for ur pics…I liked them. I somehow get a feeling that Monfils and Tsonga both have a very chill and happy personality. They seem very easy to get a long with.

I didn’t even know there was an exhib. going on in Argentina. Can u tell us who wins? I know there’s an exhib. in Bilbao, Spain. Feli and Gilles Simon are in the final of that.

Hope you are having a good weekend. 🙂 bye

Thanks, Iram! Monfils and Tsonga seem like such happy friends together.

The winner of the Buenos Aires exho was Marcos Baghdatis! Good for the Cypriot tennis player 🙂 I’ve only heard about the Bilbao exho, but saw the great photos on your site!! The atmosphere seemed very lively there.

I hope you enjoyed your weekend too—have a great Christmas week!

Gael & Jo really know how to smile for the camera, don’t they? Nice photo montage.
You’ve probably seen this, but Gael was even more expressive as a junior: http://youtu.be/ToRUXo4Gaz4

Also, I know this is off-topic, but so nice to see Venus & her new haircut… do you think she’s got her eye on John for the Olympics?

    • mariposaxprs says:

Ooh I love that junior match-up between Jo and Gael. Gael was *definitely* much more expressive, while Jo doesn’t seem as lively as he does now–I wonder if they ever go back and laugh over their junior matches against each other. As individual and full of travel the tennis career is, it must be somewhat reassuring to see some of the same faces from age 14 and onwards. Gael-Jo BFFs, for sure 🙂

Venus does look great, she seems so graceful and poised. That could be amazing, if she was scouting John for the Olympics. I think the Serena-RAndy pairing is on, so Venus will need to find a mixed dubs partner too–Venus and Isner would definitely be a cute pair!

      • ariennalee says:

Venus and Isner would be cute… and terrifying. Those two at the net?? I wouldn’t want to face them. Venus has such a fantastic face, I always like it when she goes more natural with her hair… but I do hope she doesn’t take to doing any wardrobe design for John 😉

        • mariposaxprs says:

Zomg the image of Venus and Isner at the net together! It’d be like choose-your-own-adventure: Triumph or disaster? I think I’d bet on Venus if one of them had to venture to the net 😉

Venus really is beautiful—it makes me wonder why she dresses herself in creative fashions, when a more natural look would really highlight her beauty. Isner wearing one of Venus’ creations…that’s a reality show waiting to happen! “Project Runway: Venus Designs for the Tree-like Isner.”

I am officially worried about Marcos.
Did Rafa leave a pair of capris on his last trip to Buenos Aires back in ’05 and Nalby is now wearing them in order to be more like Rafa b/c he’s subconsciously trying to impress/prove Tito wrong? Just a thought. (although, sorry Nalby–I don’t think those pants/shorts are flattering. It takes a special body to pull those off…)
Anyways, back to Gael. Gael! Him sharing the seat w/ Isner is hilarious. Gael + Jo pics are adorable! Esp. the one of the two of them looking slightly up into the camera. They look like two precious man-children! That is a ton a travel for Gael, though.

    • mariposaxprs says:

Baggy doesn’t look the same without his ponytail. Maybe he misses his old doubles partner too? 😉

Lol I agree with your take on Nalby’s capris (sometimes, I imagine Rafa and Roger trading outfits–Roger rocking the piratas with sleeveless skintight shirts–always entertaining!) I wanted to comment on Nalby’s shoelace-less sneakers and the sockless feet, but he looks so gruff in the photo I don’t want to provoke his wrath! *he can hear us*

Gael & Jo are so sweet–I think the fact that Jo looks more reserved in comparison to Gael makes the photos adorable too. I can’t imagine how Gael and Isner both fit themselves on the miniature ice-box! Special talent, for sure.

  6. I’m glad Gael’s having fun. He’s been so entertaining for the rest of us, it’s only fair that he has some fun himself.

    • mariposaxprs says:

That’s true, it struck me that Gael might be the type of player who needs to play matches in order to get his training. Isn’t that what Caro Wozniacki does? If Gael playing exhos leads to him gaining more consistency, then it sounds like a right approach for him and for fans as well! It seems he put on a great exhibition match in Buenos Aires–the fans loved him there!
