¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

May all readers enjoy a Happy New Year!

  • Rafa celebrates with the Spanish custom of eating grapes (12 in a row, nervously).  He also had Jo and Gael to accompany him at a concert.  Good cheer all around.
  • Boris Becker, in his ever-poetic way, wishes everyone a Happy New Year.
  • DelPo wishes everyone a Happy New Year too!  He’ll be playing the exho at Punta del Este with Guga, el Gato, and Cuevas on Jan. 2-3
  • Murray celebrates the New Year with the surprising news that his new coach will be gloomy tennis legend Ivan Lendl.  Muzz and Lendl seem a fitting coach-player pair.  I’m looking forward to Lendl and Judy Murray sitting in the player box together.

For those who don’t celebrate New Year’s, raise a glass to David Nalbandian, who celebrates his birthday (El Rey is no ordinary human being—he chose New Year’s Day to enter the world).

To atone for my last post, when I featured a slightly unflattering portrait of Nalby, here is a photo from back when he was a little munchkin:

He looks the same—blue eyes, mess of blond hair, and a smile that swings between angelic cherub and frightening beast.  May the injury demons back off Nalby for the 2012 season.

I play favorites with Juan Martin Del Potro, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez, Gilles Simon and the long line of mercurial talent that drives me to despair in front of the screen at odd hours during the week.

  1. $5 says Andy will be coachless again in six months. No, make it $10.

“gloomy tennis legend” Lol! I hope Andy doesn’t get bitten by one of Ivan’s German Shepards. An authoritarian man who appears to lack any sense of humor does seem like a “funny” choice of coach for a man with authority issues who likes feel free to pal around with his team. I’ll be very interested to see how this goes.

Nalby was a total baby-angel wasn’t he? I can see where he’d get the idea that he and Narcissus have something in common. 😉

Haha Lendl has 5 daughters, and a group of German Shepherds as well? He is very much a captivating legend. I’ve not watched any matches of his as he was before my time, but I like how he’s portrayed today as a contrast to McEnroe! I’m very, very interested to see how it pans out too.

According to Andre (being all Open and candid) Lendl used to wander around chiding players in the locker room with daughter for not being “man-enough” to sire sons. Heh. He does indeed have a pack of GS guard dogs. I read a story somewhere by someone who had been attacked by one of his dogs. Apparently, Ivan was very nice about the whole thing.

When I was a kid I saw Lendl and JMac play in Toronto. It was uproarious. John’s career was pretty much over by that point, and he was losing badly… but that didn’t stop him from pitching a fit over the length of time it took Lendl to serve. He went and stood in a flower box on the court and refused to get out until Ivan moved faster. I think about this sometimes when John is showering the love on Rafa. How would he have felt about Rafa’s sense of match pacing back in the day, eh? 😉

“Nervously” indeed–I know this is a tradition and all, but it looks rather dangerous to me! Eating grapes, then jumping! It’s like a choking hazard x 2! Fortunately everyone seemed to escape unscathed.
Love DelPo’s New Year’s greeting. Literally. Greetings! 🙂
Thanks for the Nalby pic! Such a cute kid. Not that he’s not cute now! Definitely still cute, Nalby! Extremely cute!

I’d only heard about eating the grapes in a row, so watching Rafa’s video was def illuminating. Spain has the bull run festivities which have injuries each yr, and now the choking hazards with the grapes! It’s good to know everyone escaped unscathed, indeed.
