Photos: DelPo as a Futbolista at La Bombonera

DelPo recently appeared on the soccer pitch to bid farewell to retiring football star, Martin Palermo.  Palermo, a long-time star at Boca Juniors (DelPo’s favorite soccer club), had recently attended DelPo’s exho matches at Punta del Este in Uruguay as well.

DelPo showed up at La Bombonera stadium to support Palermo in his farewell, and came on as an alternate during the match:

Aside from his not wearing any shin-guards to protect his legs, he does not look bad here.  Not bad at all.  He looks good!

Here is a short clip from the match.  DelPo enters at 1:52 and he assists with a goal at 2:33.  I love the commentator’s bemused “Juan Martín?!” after DelPo makes a pass to his goal-scoring teammate (at 2:48):

This spurred an entertaining Twitter conversation where tennis fans created their own “Fantasy Alternative Soccer League.”  Complete with a separate alternates list.  Last-minute additions to the team were made: Feli, Juan Carlos Ferrero … and Milos.

A resident benchwarmer was established.  Along with some basic ground rules.  I assume Nalby was established as the goal-keeper.  Nalby can cover the entire goalpost area like no other player 😉  Kudos to Kelly at @mikomonstr for the fantasy idea of tennis players as soccer stars.

DelPo as a mopey young elf (far left)

Many tennis players profess to once having considered soccer as a career.  Above is a photo of mini-DelPo from his soccer-playing days.  We’re glad he switched over to the tennis!

**Here is a post that Iram recently did, which includes photos of Juan Carlos Ferrero playing soccer for his personal foundation.  There really is an overflow of tennis players who would look the part of a futbolista!

I play favorites with Juan Martin Del Potro, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez, Gilles Simon and the long line of mercurial talent that drives me to despair in front of the screen at odd hours during the week.

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find
this matter to be really something which I
think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and very broad for me.
I’m looking forward for your next post, I will try to get
    the hang of it!

  2. Yet another way of beautifying your abode is by means of the use
of beautiful outdoor mats. The sealer is low gloss with and
oil base finish to it. You can find many good suppliers for garage flooring Raleigh.

What a fun post! DelPo looks so limber for a 6’6″ Entish Elf in that top photo. And he looked in such high-spirits when he took the field at the beginning of that video! He does’t look like quite as natural a footballer as JCF, simply because of his size, but I’d love to see an all-tennis-player soccer team. Maybe when the players retire, they could join an ex-tennis player rec league. (Because really, they scare me when they go out there without shin guards or ankle protection in the middle of the season!)

Not sure about Milos… the legs are LONG, but somehow they don’t seem like soccer legs to me. What kind of legs they ARE, I”m not sure… Victoria’s Secret legs, perhaps?

Entish Elf! I like the sound of that! He did look very happy and amazed when he entered the pitch—kind of like a school-kid who’s awed by the occasion 🙂 I agree, Juan Carlos Ferrero has excellent form, he could easily make the transition to a soccer player. There’s a reason Ferrero is called Boss!

I fully support your idea of retired tennis players forming a soccer league. While the Champion’s tour of tennis is fun, they only play one-set matches. That’s not fun for anyone. Instead, they should play soccer matches against each other. Someone find them a shin-guard sponsor, stat!! 😉

I wasn’t on board with Milos as an alternate either. I guess he’s a Barca fan, so he’s interested, but I don’t see the appeal of his legs at all. Hahaha w/the Victoria’s Secret reference. Is he still dating the model?

      • Arienna Lee says:

Was he EVER dating a model? I thought he was just looking at them and then Tweeting about it. 🙂
JCF has that classic footballer shape. Not too tall, perfect V.
Are shin guards considered terribly uncool for tennis players or something? Why to the eschew them so??

Lol, so great! (although–I have to object to Rafa as an alternate! 😉 Also, I nominate Marcos–apparently he was like, the superstar at last year’s match for Japan in Miami?). Love the ground rules. And DelPo really does look great. Love the big smile.

    • mariposaxprs says:

Haha, there really needs to be a fantasy soccer league filled with tennis players. We can have multiple teams! I did not know Marcos was also a soccer player! Hmm, interesting. He could be the player who’s useful for colorful post-goal celebrations 🙂 DelPo does look well here, doesn’t he? Perhaps Nike can take some inspiration and make him soccer-inspired tennis gear!
