Miami: DelPo & His Errands

DelPo is training in Miami, getting ready for his R2 match against the winner of Kubot-Karlovic.  So far, he’s attended Gonzo’s farewell party (Gonzo plays what may be he list match in a few hours), he did an ESPN interview wearing a nice orange-stripey shirt, and then … he posted a few photos of himself grocery-shopping.

Grocery-shopping?  That’s right, at the supermarket.  DelPo is now that player who announces his trips to the supermarket.  It looks like it was a jaunty outing for him.

He’s just an ordinary mountain of a man shopping at the supermarket for “household items,” as he puts it.  Was this Franco’s idea, to share their grocery trip with the world?  From what I can tell, there are a lot of tomatoes and pasta involved.  I spot a packet of Chips-Ahoy as well.  If he should lose a match in the future, I will blame the cookies.

Juan Martin, it’s not a Vogue photo shoot!  He grips the handles of the supermarket cart awfully tight.  Nobody who shops regularly at a supermarket pushes their carts like that (so methodically and with so much purpose…)

On Tuesday night, DelPo attended a Miami Heat match (they won!)  I think he looked happier shopping for groceries.

  • In other news, DelPo confirmed he will play the greatest exho tourny ever, the Boodles Challenge!  That’s the grass exhibition tourny that takes place right before Wimbledon.  With his participation at Queen’s confirmed, it seems DelPo is gunning hard for a solid grass season run this year.
  • Cilic and Karlovic are teaming up for doubles in Miami, presumably in preparation for the Davis Cup tie.  Their first match is against … recent IW dubs champ Rafa Nadal and his compadre, Marcel Granollers.

outta curiosity how does delpo plan to cook with all his produce? i mean I dont know any hotels that have proper kitchens… or does he stay in a guest home?

    • mariposaxprs says:

That’s a good question! I wonder if he’s staying at a rented house, or maybe he knows someone in Miami, who’s housing him? I know he’s spent time training in Miami before, so maybe he has some kind of an arrangement that doesn’t involve hotels. Which means there may be more supermarket trips ahead in the future!^^

Man, these were an unexpected delight! I love how we get multiple angles w/ him at the shopping cart–one just isn’t enough! So jealous of those Miamians who just happened to be in their neighborhood grocery store that day–how fun would that be, to run into DelPo?
I was a little disappointed to see Rafa/Marcel have big-serving Ivo in the first round, but then again, maybe this is a good opportunity for Rafa to get over his fear of big servers in a non-pressure environment! 😉 (And there’s always Cilic’s service games…much like there was Querrey’s last week in the IW final!). Of course, DelPo has Ivo up next too, doesn’t he? Hmm–Ivo had 27 aces in his match today, which maybe is a good thing–rare to have two matches in a row like that!

I’m thinking photos were staged. Bless DelPo’s heart (and whoever else was involved) for these delightfully random photos. Normally, I don’t judge the contents of other people’s supermarket carts, but I was curious to see what he ate to prepare for matches. I’m still worried about the Chips-ahoys… 😦

Lol @ the Cilic-Querrey link. Perhaps!! And you’re right, it’s a major relief (I think) that Ivo served 27 aces in today’s match. Maybe he’s bound to experience a letdown of sorts on the serving front, in his next match. He better, and DelPo will hopefully play awesomely to win. I hope Rafa-Marcel (what’s their mash-up? Marcrafa kind of sounds like Mufasa, no?) take the win in dubs!

LMAO, I coudn’t stop laughing when I saw those pics.
I had the same feeling as u. Delpo was posting for the pics. Definitely not casual snapshots. Especially the 2nd one, his face and gesture are just too cool!!! hahahaha
I wonder if it’s Franco, his trainer or his gf who took those pics. If it’s his gf, it makes sense. But if it’s Franco, I would ROFL literally. 😛

    • mariposaxprs says:

Did you see the contents of the shopping cart? Everything is packed in so neatly, it’s like someone folded shirts into a suitcase. ROFL, unless his GF is in Miami, I think it’s Franco who did everything for him. On the other hand, DelPo’s agent Ugo Colombini is in Miami with him too. Perhaps Ugo staged the supermarket photo shoot? It’s so random…but amazing 🙂 DelPo needs to work on looking more “relaxed” in the photos—I’ve never seen someone look so nervously at a stack of cookies/muffins before!!

      • Candy says:

Imagine Franco (wearing sunglasses) suddenly said in the supermarket, “Hey Juan, let me take some photos of u.”
Then a man wearing sunglasses was taking photos of another man around the supermarket . Weird. =P
Yea, perhaps it’s Ugo’s idea. Or perhaps delpo had so much fun in Dubai’s shopping spree shooting, so he decided to make one in Miami too. 😛

Lololol I never visualized what it would actually look like until you mentioned Franco in sunglasses following DelPo around a supermarket, as he shopped. It would have been pretty weird (but fun!!) to see in real life. Franco has a pretty tough job, doesn’t he? He guides DelPo on how to hit better serves, FHs and now, he is a mentor on how to go grocery shopping 🙂 I think DelPo is in his element when he’s shopping — first, Dubai (shopping for pens) and now at the supermarket, shopping for tomatoes. What next?!?! He should have a biweekly show where he does this!!

  4. tennisniche says:

Hah, that sure is an awkward set of photos!

    • mariposaxprs says:

It sure is!! I read the guest post on your site about betting in tennis. I don’t bet on tennis, but I thought it was very interesting to see what other information betting people look at. I wonder if the contents of DelPo’s supermarket cart would qualify as “relevant info”? The tomatoes would better his odds, but the chocolate-chip cookies might be a concerning factor… 😉

I will have to check back on your site for the follow-up posts!!
