Davis Cup: Draw Ceremony & a Storm Interrupts the Official Dinner

The draw ceremony took place and the ARG-CRO tie will begin in less than 24 hours:

I’m convinced Nalby and Edu’s facial expressions have opposing reactions to each other.  The happier Edu looks, the grumpier Nalby seems.

FRIDAY: Nalbandian vs. Cilic

(no footage of them from the draw ceremony)

del Potro vs. Karlovic

DelPo’s model pose, so carefully constructed.

SATURDAY: Nalby/Schwank vs. Cilic/Zovko

I was completely unaware, but Cilic and Zovko have played doubles together 14 times in their careers.  Their best achievement as a team was reaching the final at their home tournament in Umag last year, where they lost to the Italian team of Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli.  There’s a Zelko Krajan sighting on the far left, he the temperamental former coach of Dinara Safina, now captain of Team Croatia.

SUNDAY: Nalby vs. Karlovic and Del Potro vs. Cilic

What’s in the shopping bags?  Are they crinkled for effect?

More photos from the draw ceremony are available at the Davis Cup photo gallery.  Here are a couple of my favorites:

DelPo shaved and he got a haircut — he means business.  Also, the photo is amazing.

Nalby and Edu have their quarterly update meeting, in which Nalby speaks and Edu nods silently.

A hurricane interrupts the official dinner:

The night before the draw ceremony, the official dinner took place.  The weather became an issue, as a big storm passed over Buenos Aires — the organizers ended up having to suspend the dinner.  Apparently, gusty winds knocked over the glasses — the tent in which the dinner was hosted looked as if it might fall down.  Here are photos that reveal the hurricane’s damage to the site.  Pico apparently shouted, “We must leave here!,” before everyone left for their hotels (not even half an hour after the dinner had started).

Ivo Karlovic tweeted this scarily eery photo that looks as if it were a scene from a horror movie.  The blue lighting, the crazed expressions on everyone’s faces, Ivo’s hands, Antonio Veic (fourth from left) howling at the moon…

Fortunately, nobody was hurt and the clay court at Parque Roca did not suffer damage as a result of the hurricane.  Also, according to accounts of the official dinner, there were no locusts at the scene of the dinner.  Still, I feel “un poco ancios[a]” about the upcoming tie.  Vamos Argentina!

I play favorites with Juan Martin Del Potro, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez, Gilles Simon and the long line of mercurial talent that drives me to despair in front of the screen at odd hours during the week.

All those pics are just so awesome!!!!!!!!!! haha, it seems the childhood sweethearts are ignoring nalby, and al rey is not happy obviously, so he goes to lecture the lamb. LMAO (but did delpo tie his shoelace?) Delpo and Cilic are so sweet.

How could this actually happen? very dangerous! It seems it could have hurt the players and all the people there! oh….

LOL, I’m now convinced that’s what happened at the draw ceremony. The expression on El Rey’s face was gold — there are so many funny/great photos of him at press conferences. I’m now convinced Nalby took out his anger on Edu!! Poor lamb 🙂

Yea, apparently there were even rumors (unfounded rumors) that they might have to switch the venue at the last minute, b/c of the rain. Thankfully, it looks like it’s not too big of an issue, because the hurricane passed. Will have to do a sunshine dance to make sure the tie goes as scheduled!

  2. Not capable of sophisticated tennis commentary this week… still worn out from the IW-Miami swing, so can I just talk about haircuts? Is it me, or is Delpo experimenting with more sophisticated, manly haircuts of late? I like.

And Pico– from the hue & cry in the twitter TL, I expected him nearly bald. It looks good. That photo of him and Delpo is a recipe for happy…. but I was a little sorry for Pico not to get chosen for the singles. I understand, of course. But still. Apparently, TC will not be carrying any of this tie or Spain/Austria in the States. Irritating.

Zelko is the Croatia captain?? Yikes. Also, I remember seeing him in someone’s box during Miami… he’s coaching another of the WTA players, right? I’ll google, you don’t need to answer that! Good luck to your ARG this weekend!

Agreed, I think DelPo *is* experimenting with shorter, manly-looking haircuts! If I remember, he got his last haircut at Rotterdam (it was a most excellent haircut!) This most recent haircut seems a bit pouffier at the top. I think he’s exploring the short bouffant look? 😉 I really like how short hair looks on him!

Maybe DelPo & Pico got their hair cut together, and that’s why Nalby looks disgruntled, b/c he had gotten his own hair cut right before Miami started. It’s kind of creepy that I remember when they got their haircuts. *In my defense* Nalby played very well at IW and many attributed that to his longer hair at the time (the Rapunzel factor). Whereas DelPo, he played well at Rotterdam too. So DelPo plays well with short hair and Nalby plays well with longer hair. I should keep an updated chart!

I think Krajan was/is coaching Cibulkova. I don’t remember hearing news of them splitting up, but I’m not entirely sure of the WTA-side, outside of a few players…
