The Gillette Federer Tour Comes to Argentina

After a series of exho matches against Bellucci, Tsonga and Haas, the Fed left Sao Paulo and made his way to Argentina, where he will face DelPo in two exho matches on Dec. 12 and 13.

On his way to Buenos Aires, Fed first stopped by Iguazu Falls, where he took this photo at what is quite possibly the world’s most beautiful waterfall:

The Federer Express then landed in Buenos Aires.  This is Fed’s first time traveling to Argentina and Argie tennis fans waited in the dark night to cheer his arrival.  Robert Federer is also part of the entourage and this video of Fed’s arrival in BsAs is hilarious, if only for the first part, where Papa Fed steps out of the airport to loud cheers, only to then hastily retreat back into the airport terminal.  Moments later, Roger steps out to even louder applause:

Fed then enjoyed a meal of Argentina’s famed asado, after which he had a press conference with DelPo, ahead of their exho matches.  In addition to their tennis exhos, they will be playing football on Thursday at DelPo’s beloved Bombonera stadium.  Fed and DelPo will be playing on one side against Argie futbolistas Riquelme and Batistuta.

FedPotro went on quite the charm offensive at their press conference, which can be viewed here.

They stared lovingly into each other’s eyes as they spoke of their upcoming exho.  Fed said one of his reasons for visiting Argentina was the rivalries he enjoyed with ARG’s roster of talent over the years, including Gaudio, Nalby and DelPo.

DelPo, who has spent the off-season winning awards and attending polo tournaments, makes his first official appearance after the London WTFs.

It’s quite ironic that this is the Gillette Federer Tour, given DelPo’s infrequent shaving tendencies.  He is nicely scruffy.

The secret murmurs.  DelPo usually reserves his secret murmuring for only the closest of pals, like Pico.  At the presser, DelPo said “I consider Roger as my friend.  I don’t know if he feels the same,” to which Roger grinned and patted DelPo’s shoulder, assuring him that the feeling was mutual.

I could write a ten-page story based on the feelings being expressed in the photo above.

Fed had nice words for DelPo and said that it was entirely within the realm of possibility that DelPo could one day contend for the no. 1 ranking.  It’s not the type of thing to be said lightly and I think it’s a nice vote of confidence from Fed on DelPo’s form.  The quotes from Fed’s presser can be seen here (in Spanish).

FedPotro then attended a special dinner, where DelPo showed his rebellious streak by going sans tie:

Looking at the tie DelPo’s coach Franco Davin chose to wear, I suppose it’s not the worst thing ever that DelPo decided to attend the event tie-less:

Per Argie journalist Sebastian Torok, the woman standing to Davin’s left is his girlfriend/wife.  Wow!

Fed was apparently gifted a miniature version of Messi’s national jersey.  I suppose his twin daughters will fight over it! 🙂

The menu for the dinner is listed here.  I’m pretty sure DelPo had a say in deciding the dessert, which was brownies with ice cream (oh well, it’s the off-season!)

Here’s hoping that the FedPotro exhos are as fun as Fed’s matches in Brazil!

In closing, I leave you with a pair of “way back when” style photos that show DelPo and Fed at their dorktastic best (on the beach with long hair):

Del DorkTro

And Dorkerer.

Since both photos above are highly unflattering to both men, here they are playing football in the past:

And Federinho!

Let the games begin!

Woah! Franco’s wife/ girlfriend!!! Blonde beauty, isn’t she? 😀 Franco looks so sharp in that picture (minus the tie). Whoop! 😀

Recently, a Chinese media person (who also works for Li-Ning I believe) has posted something, on Weibo (a Chinese online social network similar to Twitter), that may or may not relate to Delpo. My rough translation:
“……. (Talking about the Li-Ning – ATP jacket he’s wearing (see the picture below)) …… Oh hey, the rumour of someone signing a contract with someone is not true. Phew. Otherwise my ranking in the brand has to be even lower.”

Some Delpo’s fans thinks that he’s talking about the rumour of Delpo signing with Li-Ning. Who knows? But some fans are already very pleased that Delpo stays at Nike (which they believe). Haha. *shrug* 😛

I was so surprised when I saw that photo of Franco. I wonder if DelPo will play the new Bogota, Colombia tournament next year. Maybe then Franco’s wife/girlfriend can travel along with him to attend the matches?

Thanks for the Weibo link regarding the Li-Ning rumor! The same Twitter account that said DelPo might leave Nike for Li-Ning also said that Grigor Dimitrov would leave Nike for Wilson clothing. So far, neither event has been announced. Nico Almagro just announced he was leaving Reebok for Lotto, so it seems like now is the time for players to announce a contract with a new sponsor.

One interesting thing is that Ugo Colombini was in Milan for the recent Sharapova-Ivanovic-Errani-etc WTA exhibition matches. I saw a photograph of him with Sharapova at the Armani store. I wonder if Ugo was in Milan for DelPo, perhaps? I tried asking a journo if he knew why Ugo was there, but no one knows why. It should be interesting to see how it develops…

Armani?! Hahaha. I would love to see Delpo in Armani, whether in underwear (eh? :P) or just suit. Anyway, isn’t Ugo from Italy? Maybe he’s just having his holiday at home?! Or at the same time attending some events to widen his social/ business network for work? Or maybe Ugo really was trying to get a deal for Delpo?! Haha. 😀

If Delpo ends up staying at Nike, those rumours may just be released from …. um…. Delpo’s camp (?) in the attempt to get a better deal with Nike?! Just like some footballers would say they want to leave or claim some footy clubs have approached them or something like that, in order to get a better deal with the original club who may still want to keep them. Didn’t Ugo say publicly before that Delpo could get a 6-digit deal with Li-Ning or something like that?! Haha. Or maybe I think too much?! But if it’s really like what I said, I would say “Well done, Ugo!” 😀

Like you said, interesting to see what’s going on… 😀

Oh! I just saw these photos of DelPo arriving in Mendoza. The photos are blurry, so it’s tough to tell what brand t-shirt he’s wearing, but it doesn’t look like Nike. It doesn’t quite look like Li-Ning either, although it could be… *that is the extent of my detective work so far* 🙂

One would have hoped Fed’s fashion sense would rub off on Delpo but it’s not happening. Still, who can complain about a glimpse of that manly, hairy chest? I heard a new term, “manscaping” which refers to how men deal with their body hair and I say, let it all hang out – “don’t shave a hair for me” to paraphrase an old song! Just wish we could get a few strands for our lockets. He and Davin make quite a statement together. Glad to see Franco has a lady is his life, was beginning to wonder if he was a monk or something, but I’d never let my man out of the house in that ensemble.
The PoFed bromance is in high gear now, can you smell the musk? Are those beef cattle that make their asados stampeding across the pampas? There is no denying the sheer adoration Delpo feels whenever they are together, I have to wonder if he has a poster of Fed on his bedroom wall (what we wouldn’t give for a peek at THAT!). If Fed weren’t an old family man with the formidable Mirka to answer to they could run amok together through those naughty boliches.
I’m waiting to see how the Argies will receive Delpo at their match. I don’t think he’s over getting boo’d at the DC match. The crowd will go crazy for Fed so it will be fine if they just stick together and don’t give the crazies a chance to voice their animus.
BTW, did something happen to that old video of Delpo from the USO 2008 when he had the crying fit at the presser? I couldn’t find it. It’s the gem of my collection of great crying moments in tennis.
Happy Holidays and thanks for all the great work you do to keep this board going.

Haha, it’s so very ironic that this is the Gillette Federer tour, given how DelPo always has a 5 o’clock shadow and his face is always scruffier by the end of the match.

I was surprised by the photo of Franco too! He did seem very Buddha-ish, but it’s good to know he has a life outside of coaching DelPo. As for the necktie…well, one step at a time, right? Lol 🙂

“Can you smell the musk?” <– LOL. I love the undertones of the FedPotro bromance and it is most definitely fueled by DelPo's adoration for Fed. Those photos where DelPo and Fed are staring at each other are amazing! Perhaps that's why Mirka and the family didn't travel to South America with Fed? That way Fed can spend more time bromancing with DelPo.

I just checked the old video from DelPo's USO '08 presser and the link doesn't appear to work anymore 😦 That was the only link I know of for that press conference (it's not available on Youtube or the other major sites). I'll def let you know if I come across another link for that one.

Happy Holidays to you Rita!! Glad to chat with fellow DelPo fans 🙂 Hope you enjoy the end of the year. Good tidings!

    • Candy says:

Are you two talking about this video? Does this link work for you? Delpo 😥

This video gives me mixed feeling. It’s sad, but I laughed when I thought about Delpo winning the USO the following year. Who knew this crying boy would win it the following year?! hehe 😀 )

      • Rita says:

YES!!! Thanks a million for finding this. After the long winning streak that breakthrough year, he was just overwhelmed. Our Delpo’s willingness to be open with his emotions win or lose – is his most endearing trait. Imagine his reaction when he wins his next Grand Slam which could well be next year.

      • mariposaxprs says:

Sweet!! That interview is still alive on the internet! That is an awesome find, I was sad when the Google Videos link didn’t work anymore.

I have a similar reaction to watching that interview too. On one hand, it’s sad to see him so upset at himself. Looking back though, it’s almost funny how he would be a champion one year later at Flushing Meadows. It’s like when children cry, but you give them candy, and fifteen minutes later it’s like they were never upset to begin with. Lol 😀
