Of the eight players who were originally scheduled to play the AAMI Kooyong Classic, Pico withdrew with a hand injury and Kei Nishikori withdrew with a knee injury. Then, Tipsy retired during his match against Baghdatis, while Milos Raonic lost in his match against Lleyton Hewitt.
How apt is it that of the players photographed at the draw ceremony (in the photo above), DelPo is sitting like a boss while Baghdatis is quite boss-like himself?
Berdy also won his opening match against Ivan Dodig (note: Berdy’s hairstyle is a bit too precious for my tastes).
Pico had to pull out of the Kooyong exho with a hand injury, which should hopefully heal in time for the AO. Paul Henri Mathieu replaced Pico in the draw and lost his first exho against DelPo.
DelPo stepped onto the Kooyong court with his new AO outfit. His new kit is a nice contrast from the previous neon-green “seaweed” shirt (as much as I liked DelPo’s lucky neon-green shirt, I like the more conservative and clean colors of this new kit):
DelPo’s game was a bit rusty and he netted a fair number of BHs in this match. He was up a break in the 2nd, but he was broken back en route to losing the 2nd set. However, he upped his consistency to eventually win the match in the decider.
However, the rust in DelPo’s game did provide some nice candid shots of his new outfit 🙂
DelPo debuted his new Nike sneakers, from the Nike Air Max Cage line:

Here’s hoping he lives up to his shiny new outfit in his next match against Baghdatis (who defeated Tipsy, after Tipsy retired due to an “elbow injury”)!
In other news, DelPo has hired Jorge Viale, creator of the tennis site FueBuena, as head of his PR. This is an excellent move, as Viale has been a great source for Argentinean tennis news-writing. Given the complaints surrounding DelPo’s lack of communication on Davis Cup this year, his decision to hire PR is a sound move. Viale would take the burden off Franco Davin for communicating DelPo’s latest news. So far, DelPo’s run a very slim operation with just Franco Davin and physio Martiniano Orazi by his side (with occasional appearances from agent Ugo Colombino). Viale is reportedly now in the process of creating DelPo’s official website, which should be worth looking forward to.
