Madrid: DelPo Withdraws from Madrid, Ahead of the Draw Ceremony

In hindsight, the writing was on the wall.  Due to DelPo’s slow recovery from the flu/virus that had caused him to withdraw from his title defense campaign at the Portugal Open, DelPo also withdrew from the upcoming Mutua Madrid Open.

As of Thursday, DelPo had still been undecided about whether or not to fly out to Madrid.  Due to his slow recovery from the viral illness he’d been diagnosed with on April 22, he was unable to train in a meaningful capacity this past week.

As a semifinalist last year, DelPo was defending 360 points at Madrid.

I will update the post as more news is issued from his camp.

Update (05.03.2013): Bronchospasms caused by original virus are reported as the cause of DelPo’s withdrawal from Madrid.  A quick search reveals that bronchospasms are common in people with asthma.  However, bronchospasms can also be triggered by viral illnesses like influenza or the rhinovirus (common cold) in people with no prior history of asthma.

The goal is for him to recover fully in time for the Rome Masters.  The text of the official communication from DelPo’s team implies that his participation in Rome is still up for question.  Let’s hope he recovers fully.

Now you’ll pardon me for saying this would happen, that he rushed his recovery and has a relapse. As a lifelong asthmatic myself, I’d had episodes like this over the years that inevitably require steroids to break the inflammation, a drug that he may have refused out of concern for drug testing. Remember he refused anesthesia when he had his teeth fixed back in 2009 for the same reason. If such is the case, it was a very foolish decision and only makes the infection harder to fight. I really feel sorry for him, this may cost him months off the tour. It’s ironic that Nalby is having surgery in Spain for his shoulder. Maybe their shared misery will lead to a rapprochement while they’re off recovering.

I guess he caught a pretty serious virus 😦 It seems there are viruses that induce asthma symptoms in those with no prior history of asthma. That’s what appears to have happened with DelPo, since I don’t remember him having asthma issues before in his career.

I guess DelPo’s taking the medications he needs while following the WADA guidelines. I’m reading that steroid inhalers can be used to treat non-asthmatic adults who have asthma-like symptoms after a viral infection, but that these symptoms can take 8 weeks (8 weeks!) to go away. Let’s have a prayer circle and hope it doesn’t take anywhere near as long for him…

Allergies and pollen/dust can make life tough for asthmatics. Hope you’re taking care too as the weather gets warmer!

Nalby had two surgeries in Barcelona, for both his shoulder and his hip. He’ll need 4 months rehabilitation, but he says he’ll still try to play doubles for the DC SF. Sadly, I don’t have high hopes of rapprochement between those two any time soon. If anything, the pressure on DelPo to play the DC tie will only grow….
